The First Ghana Music Festival hits town in March

The first Ghana Music Week (GMW) will be held at the National Theater from March 4 to 10, 2013 under the theme: “Engaging MUSIC as a catalyst for Unity and National Growth”.

“Our key goal is to create the industry’s biggest platform to bring together and encourage participation of artistes, stakeholders, the media, decision/policy makers and music users; and to recognize, promote & underscore the importance and value of Ghanaian music forms”, says MUSIGA President, Bice Osei Kuffour.

Ghana Music Week will feature three main branches namely: training/Workshops/Seminars; Film/Theater & Comedy and Musical Concerts, and will parade over 500 - both emerging and established- musicians, bands & creative industry players.

Ghana Music Week is expected to attract visitors in excess of 20,000 over 7 days.

Highlight of events for the week include:

• Ghana Music Day on-the-air, in association with the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) on Saturday, March 2, 2013

• Sales & Exhibition- display of general goods and services all week at both the exterior and foyer of the National Theater.

• Training and Seminars for musicians / creative arts people

• Symposiums, workshops, stakeholders’ dialogue

• National Music Essay & Poetry Contest- for student

• Food Court & Chill Zone- including bars, a resident Niteclub

• Highlife, Gospel Concerts and Comedy Shows

• Ghana Unity Concert (56Hitzdependence Concert) - Wednesday March 6, 2013

• Musiga All-Star and Awards Nite- Saturday March 9, 2013

‘Time with the Musician’ will see experienced musicians teach interested persons how to play various musical instruments.

The first wave of artists to perform during Ghana Music Week, including 5 big African musicians, will be announced in the coming weeks.

D-Black Signs $150,000 Deal with Telecommunication giant-Rlg

Ghana's most visible music brand internationally 'D-Black da Ghana Bwouy' had landed a super deal with communication giants Rlg where the 'Vera' hit maker appears as lead Celebrity in the television commercial for their new ultra modern brand of phones, the Rlg 'VIVA'.

That's not where it ends, we always tell you D-Black is the most business minded artist in Ghana. Now check this, the T.V commercial was shot in Johannesburg , South Africa with 'Black Avenue Works' the advertising & marketing firm of which D-Black is C.E.O. Wow!

D-Black is rumoured to have raked in about $150,000 for his appearance in the ad alone. The rapper tweeted via his @DBLACKGH twitter account a few photos from the shoot as well.

The Rlg VIVA ad also features big brother Africa celebrities Barbz from South Africa, Lomwe from Malawi, Mnet Star Gist Host, Vimbai from Zimababwe and Ghanaian super duo R2Bees. It definitely seems like it going to be a star studded T.V commercial!

Rlg Communications are definitely raising the bar with this one. We can't wait till the commercial hits our screens as we already know the high quality standard music videos D-Black's team produces. Kudos D-Black! Hardwork pays.

Wanlov wins Mondomix Babel Med Music Award

Even before the March 21 to 23 event in Marseille, France, Wanlov the Kubolor has been informed he is picking up an award at this year’s Mandomix Babel Med Music awards.

The FOKN BOIS artiste broke the news on his Facebook page on Tuesday evening. “Just received news that I have won the Mondomix Babel Med Music award for 2013…FOKN African Gypsy VIM”.

One of the world’s best international events, and highly acclaimed by professionals around the world, the Mandomix Babel Med Music awards brings together artistes from different countries to exchange ideas on World Music.

Ghana Music Awards board expanded

This year’s Ghana Music Awards board will be made up of industry personalities representing the various sectors.

The Board according to the organizers, “will be responsible for categorizing and collating the entries submitted as well as short listing the final list of nominees for each category”.

“They contribute 50% of the votes scoring for the industry awards categories and 30% for the public awards categories.

Past members of the board have included Abraham Ohene Djan, Hammer, Bessa Simons, Paulina Oduro, Obuor, Diana Hopeson, Fred Kyei Mensah, Sammy Forson, Amandzeba and Mark Okraku Mantey.

The Ghana Music Awards is sponsored by Vodafone.

Ghana Academy Awards in March

The maiden edition of the Ghana Academy awards (GAA) will be held on the 23rd March, 2013.

This event is among other things aimed at establishing a common entertainment platform which recognizes all the practitioners of the creative arts in Ghana.

According to the chairman of the Ghana academy awards planning committee, Mr. John Abeiku Sagoe‘’ this event will hopefully raise standards in the industry and will foster industry cohesion and unity’’.

The Ghana Academy awards 2013 is organized by Kaydm and recognized and supported by the Ghana actors’ Guild and the Musicians union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

Nominations are hereby open to the public and practitioners of the creative arts for the following categories

1. Lifetime achievement Award

2. Best actor/actress

3. Best TV series

4. Best movie

5. Best movie producer

6. Best music producer

7. Comedian of the year

8. Best music artist

9. Best music video

10. Best actor/actress supporting role

11. Best director

12. Best music album

16. Best original story

17. Best choral group

18. Best band

Nominations can be sent to the event secretariat on the 7th floor, heritage towers, Accra or delivered to the MUSIGA or ACTORS’ GUILD offices in Accra for onward submission to the planning committee.

Nominees will be invited to defend their works before the events planning committee while the public is also given the opportunity to vote for their favorite entries on short code 17 62.
